Northern California Pediatric Ophthalmologist

The Community
Sacramento, the state capital of California, is a thriving city with a metropolitan area of nearly 2 million residents who enjoy an abundance of recreational, cultural and educational activities and affordable housing. This region is expected to grow by 50 percent from a 2000 population of 2.84 million to 4.27 million by 2025. It is a progressive city with a diverse economy that continues to grow in business and population.

Sacramento has the title of the city of rivers and trees and is located 90 miles northeast of San Francisco and 383 miles north of Los Angeles.  There are a thousand miles of Delta waterways, the American River and Sacramento River to play on, the American River Parkway bike trail to ride on, and numerous cultural, fine arts and musical events. The Sacramento Kings, along with the River Cats minor league baseball franchise, provide excitement to the sports enthusiasts.

The economy in the region is over $60 billion per annum. Agriculture and commerce blend creatively. Over the years, high-tech companies have taken note of the area’s amenities and moved here, and now the high-tech output of the region places Sacramento at 21st out of 100 other metro areas. Sacramento has numerous community colleges along with California State University, Sacramento, and is a short drive to the University of California, Davis.

Year-round opportunities for outdoor fun abound in and around Sacramento, including water skiing, snow skiing, fishing, backpacking, boating, kayaking, white water rafting, mountain biking, hiking, camping and wine tasting, all within a short drive from Sacramento. Closer to home, enjoy symphony concerts, Broadway performances, fine dining, jazz weekends, farmers markets, community arts and crafts, festivals, mall shopping, antiques, gifts and boutique shopping. Go to www.sacramentochamber.com  for more information.

The Opportunity
The B/E or B/C Pediatric Ophthalmologist will join a successful practice that was started by the existing Pediatric Ophthalmologist in 1993.  This opportunity is available now because of the high volume of patients who have to wait 8 to 9 weeks to be seen.  Additionally, the practice would like to pick up failed vision exams again instead of turning them away since there is not enough time to do them.

This physician now sees 30 to 35 patients per day and has surgery approximately 7 ½ hours per week. You will have 4.5 days work week with a staff that is highly trained and child-friendly.  The office is very organized and efficient and is well equipped with M and S technology. There is a play room for children and TVs in each room to help focus their attention. The Pediatric Ophthalmologist has created a fun and happy environment.

There is an excellent payor mix in this practice resulting in financially sound reimbursements. The mix is approximately 40% PP0, 30% HMO, 20% patient pay, 6% Medi Cal, and 4% Medicare.

The Pediatric Ophthalmologist with whom you would work completed her Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus Fellowship at Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute and California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco. Her Ophthalmology Residency was completed at UC Davis, Sacramento as was her medical school training. For more information, please go to www.satterfieldmd.com

The Practice
Practice the full range of care with the exception of ROP. You will serve a patient population from newborns to adults in their 90's (strabismus care only). There are two nearby surgery centers in which you would work.

Cover your own patients during the week and have a superb call arrangement with only two weekends per year and no ER call! You may have consults with the pediatric intensivists and neonatologists.

Have an excellent referral base of over 500 resulting in a great variety of cases from routine to rare. You will have a network of high caliber pediatric specialists available to you such as retina, cornea, neurology, neurosurgery, glaucoma, etc. for consults and referrals.

Teaching is available in this practice and an option for you if you are interested in training. There are two FP residency programs and the ophthalmology resident from the University California, Davis (who is on the pediatric ophthalmology rotation) that rotate through the office.

You will have the autonomy to build and run your own practice with the support of a highly experienced and respected Pediatric Ophthalmologist to mentor you clinically and in the overall business operations of the practice. The staff has high morale and there is low turnover resulting in a professional, family-oriented atmosphere.

The Independent Physician Association
You can belong to Sutter Independent Physicians (SIP), a 500+ independent physician association (IPA) whose mission is to promote an efficient practice environment for independent physicians to deliver excellent healthcare to their patients and communities. This successful IPA provides support and leverage in contracting with a variety of insurance companies. SIP serves patients in Sacramento, Placer and Yolo Counties and provides access to more than 700 specialists (through Sutter Physician Alliance) in the region.

Sutter Physician Alliance (SPA) is a single-aligned network that is comprised of three primary medical groups and Sutter Neuroscience Medical Group. The three medical groups are SIP, Sutter Medical Group (based in Sacramento), and Sutter West Medical Group (based in Davis). Besides access to 700 specialists, SPA provides patient access to Sutter’s advanced medical technology, five convenient hospitals and many physician offices within the community.

Compensation and Benefits
A market competitive salary is offered with the potential to become a partner after two years. Once a partner, the compensation is based on productivity, providing you with great potential to increase your earnings. This system is based on fair and equitable principles with the Pediatric Ophthalmologist.

Along with this compensation is a comprehensive benefits package. This package includes professional liability coverage, health insurance, vacation, CMEs and a SEP IRA (once you qualify).
